FAQs for Kids

What Is Pockets?
Pockets is a fun devotional magazine for children around the ages of 8-12. It comes out 11 times a year (the January/February issue is a combined one), and each issue has a different theme. It has 48 pages and includes stories, games, activities, poems, daily Bible readings, recipes, and more! The art is colorful and fun. Pockets is published by The Upper Room. Pockets has been recently redesigned so check out our new look and features! But our purpose–to help children grow closer with God–remains the same.

Who reads Pockets?
Besides children, many parents, grandparents, and Sunday school teachers read Pockets, too.

How long has Pockets been around?
Pockets has been published since 1981.

Why is the magazine called Pockets?
Kids’ pockets are usually filled with fun and important things. Pockets magazine is also filled with fun and important things!

Who writes the stories and makes up the games in Pockets?

Each month, the Pockets editors receive in the mail about 300-350 submissions. Writers around the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world send us stories, poems, games, activities, and articles. Out of those 350-350 submissions each month, the editors choose about five stories, three poems, six games, two activities, and one article. It’s hard to choose!

How can I get my photo printed on the Pocketsful of Friends page or my letter on the Pocketsful of Letters page?

We receive lots of letters and photos from our readers, and we love to read and see each one. Send your photo (along with your name, state-or country-you live in, and hobbies) or your letter (along with your name and where you live) to the address below. You can also email us at pockets@upperroom.org. Any photos sent by email should be at least 300 dpi. Letters and photos selected for publication will appear in Pockets 6-8 months after we receive them.

Can I send a poem or drawing or pet photo or Bible verse or recipe or some jokes to you?

Definitely! We love to get these from our readers. We print poems, drawings, pet photos, recipes, and jokes from our readers on the Club Pages. And each issue we print a different Bible verse suggested by a reader on the Pocketsful of Scripture pages. We also have a feature in Pockets called “God in My Life.” So you can send us a letter about how God has helped you through something or how God has worked in your life or what God means to you. Again, we can’t print everything we receive, and it will be at least 6-8 months before you see your submission in Pockets if we choose to use it. See the address below.
